At its 36th meeting, held at Maastricht University from September 17 to 19, 2026, at the invitation of Professor Marta Pertegás Sender, GEDIP adopted the first part of its guidelines on the public policy exception. It also began reviewing draft guidelines on the extension of the Brussels I Regulation to situations involving non-EU defendants, as well as guidelines on class actions under the Brussels I Regulation. A report was made on the relations between Member States and third States in the area covered by European regulations on private international law.

In the section on current developments in EU law, GEDIP heard presentations on the Shipova case before the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Greenpeace v. Energy Transfer case in the Amsterdam District Court and in the North Dakota Supreme Court, and on new developments in private international law regarding parenthood and surrogacy.

Finally, GEDIP also heard the traditional presentations on the Commission’s current projects as well as on the case law of the European Court of Human Rights relating to private international law for 2025–2026.

The documents adopted at the Maastricht meeting, as well as the working documents discussed during that meeting, will be posted below as they are finalized.
